Hurricane Season Preparedness for CSRA Homeowners
Storm Preparedness for Augusta and North Augusta Area Homes
The CSRA may be 150+ miles from the coast, but hurricane remnants regularly bring destructive winds, heavy rain, and flooding to our area. Hurricane Michael (2018) caused widespread damage in Georgia well inland, and Tropical Storm Irma (2017) knocked out power to thousands in the Augusta area.
How Hurricanes Affect the CSRA
When a major hurricane makes landfall on the Southeast coast, the CSRA typically experiences:
- Tropical storm-force winds (40–73 mph) — Strong enough to down trees and damage roofs
- Heavy rainfall (4–10+ inches) — Creates flash flooding, especially near creeks and low-lying areas
- Extended power outages — Some areas can lose power for days
- Tornado risk — Hurricane remnants spawn tornadoes, particularly in the right-front quadrant of the storm
Pre-Season Insurance Checklist
- Review your policy now — Don't wait until a storm is approaching. Most carriers impose binding restrictions when a named storm is within range.
- Check your deductible — Some policies have separate, higher deductibles for hurricane or wind damage. Know your out-of-pocket exposure.
- Consider flood insurance — There's a 30-day waiting period for new flood policies. If you wait until a storm is forecast, it's too late.
- Document your property — Walk through every room taking photos and video. Store this documentation in the cloud, not just on your phone.
- Review your dwelling coverage — Construction costs have risen significantly. Make sure your coverage reflects current replacement costs.
Physical Preparedness Steps
- Trim trees and remove dead branches — This is the #1 source of storm damage claims in the CSRA
- Clean gutters and downspouts — Proper drainage prevents water intrusion
- Secure outdoor furniture and equipment
- Know your shutoff valves — Water and gas shutoffs should be accessible
- Assemble an emergency kit — Water, food, medications, flashlights, and copies of insurance documents
After the Storm: Filing Claims
- Document all damage with photos before making any repairs
- Make temporary repairs to prevent further damage (this is covered by your policy)
- Contact your insurance agent immediately — don't wait for the adjuster
- Keep all receipts for emergency repairs and temporary living expenses
