Hail Damage and Your Roof: Insurance Claims Guide for the CSRA

Hail Damage: The Silent Roof Killer

The CSRA experiences several hail events each year, and even small hailstones can cause significant damage to asphalt shingle roofs. The tricky part? Hail damage isn't always visible from the ground, which means many homeowners don't know they have a claim until leaks develop months later.

How to Spot Hail Damage

After a hailstorm, look for these signs:

  • On shingles: Black circular marks, missing granules, soft spots, exposed fiberglass mat
  • On gutters: Dents, dings, and accumulated granules in downspout areas
  • On vents and flashings: Dents in metal components
  • On siding: Dings, cracks, or chips
  • On windows: Cracked or chipped glass, damaged screens

Important: Don't climb on your roof. Use binoculars or hire a professional inspector.

Filing a Hail Damage Claim

  1. Document the storm — Note the date, time, and severity. Check NOAA records for official hail reports in your area.
  2. Photograph damage — Get close-up photos of damaged shingles, gutters, and other affected areas.
  3. Contact your agent — Report the damage promptly. Most policies have reporting timeframes.
  4. Get an independent inspection — Before the insurance adjuster arrives, consider having a reputable roofing contractor inspect and document damage.
  5. Be present for the adjuster visit — Walk the property with them and point out all damage.

Watch Out for Storm Chasers

After every major hail event, out-of-town "storm chaser" roofing companies flood the CSRA. Red flags include:

  • Going door-to-door offering free inspections
  • Pressuring you to sign contracts immediately
  • Offering to "cover your deductible" (this is insurance fraud)
  • No local address or references
  • Requiring large upfront deposits

Always use a reputable local contractor with verifiable references and proper licensing.

Understanding Your Hail Deductible

Some policies have a separate wind/hail deductible that's percentage-based rather than a flat dollar amount. On a $300,000 home with a 2% wind/hail deductible, you'd pay $6,000 out of pocket before coverage kicks in. Know your deductible before a storm hits.

Protect Your Roof Proactively

Consider upgrading to impact-resistant (Class 4) shingles at your next replacement. They resist hail damage better and qualify for 10–35% insurance discounts with most carriers.
