Insurance Planning for Your PCS Move

A Permanent Change of Station (PCS) move is stressful enough without worrying about insurance gaps. Whether you're moving to or from the CSRA, this guide covers the insurance steps every military family should take.

Before You Move: The Insurance Checklist

  1. Notify your current insurance agent — At least 30 days before your move, let your agent know your plans.
  2. Review your auto policy — You'll need coverage valid in your new state. Requirements vary significantly (e.g., South Carolina requires UM coverage; many states don't).
  3. Document your belongings — Take photos and video of everything before packers arrive. This is critical for claims.
  4. Understand TMO/DITY coverage limits — Military moves include some liability coverage, but it's often limited to $0.60 per pound per item. A 10-pound TV worth $1,500 would only be covered for $6.
  5. Consider full replacement value protection — For household goods shipments, you can purchase additional Full Replacement Value (FRV) protection.

During the Move: Coverage Gaps to Watch

  • Items in transit — Your homeowner's policy may limit coverage for belongings in transit. Verify this before moving day.
  • Storage — If items go into temporary storage, ensure they're covered. Some policies exclude long-term storage.
  • Rental/temporary housing — You need renter's insurance during TLF or temporary housing stays. This is often overlooked.
  • Vehicle transport — If shipping a vehicle (POV), verify your auto policy covers transport damage.

At Your New Location

  • Update your auto registration and insurance within the required timeframe (usually 30–90 days depending on the state)
  • Get new homeowner's or renter's insurance effective on your move-in date
  • Review state-specific requirements — Each state has different minimum coverages, and some have unique requirements (e.g., earthquake insurance in California)

Selling vs. Renting Your Current Home

Many military families rent out their current home during a PCS. If you do this, you must switch from a homeowner's policy to a landlord insurance policy. A standard homeowner's policy won't cover a tenant-occupied property.
